World of Politics with Harry McGee
What’s scarier than Halloween ghouls and skeletons and dead aliens for politicians of the two ‘big’ Civil War parties is the gnawing fear that they themselves might be zombies in the next few years. If you look around Europe, you will see that in many States the traditional political set-up is being turned on its head.
In Sweden, the Social Democrats ruled throughout the 20th century. But in this new century, the governments have become increasingly fractured and the current current is one that is effectively controlled by a right-wing anti-immigrant party.
The same goes for Italy where a party that’s in a similar place on the political spectrum has taken power. This is not about the rise of right-wing, anti-immigrant and nationalist parties, but that’s a European phenomenon, for sure, right now. It’s about the way that new forces on the left, the right, the centre, (and from left field) have swept away the traditional power bases in so many counters.
It’s happened in Greece, in Spain (to a certain extent) and certainly in France, where the Gaullists and the Socialists parties are mere shadows of what they once were.
