Since 2012, Drop Everything has been an influential facilitator for arts and culture on Inis Oírr. Founded by Mary Nally, the organisation’s ethos is centred around promoting careers viable and wide-ranging. Over the years, there have been various Drop Everything showcases on the island featuring a host of successful Irish creatives.
And one project that incorporates that strategy is Do Anything, which has been run in Inis Oírr secondary school Coláiste Ghobnait since 2018.
The premise of Do Anything is simple – a series of talks and workshops for Transition Year students in the school, with a particular focus on the application of practical skills in creative industries.
This year, the programme culminated in the pupils constructing a makeshift venue for their school and organising an event to demonstrate the skills they had acquired. Alannah Dunford, who is one of the organisers involved in Galway electronic night Ar Ais Arís, was a part of the team for the most recent edition of Do Anything.
“It all started with Mary Nally,” Alannah explains. “She was the founder of Drop Everything. It has these kinds of events, usually every second year, out on Inis Oírr.
“She brings together all these different artists, national and international, and they spend maybe a week out there as a showcase.
“I was involved last May, and it was amazing – there are such interesting people out there and it’s obviously a stunning place to do it. Mary really tries to involve music in everything she does out there, so she set up Do Anything which revolves around the students from the secondary school and the primary school.
