UG Maree were brought crashing back down to earth in the league on Saturday as they put in their worst performance of the season in slipping to a narrow home defeat to Dublin visitors Killester.
It was a bad weekend overall for Galway’s three national league sides, as Maigh Cuilinn also slipped to defeat in the Men’s Super League on Saturday, the long trek to Belfast ending in a nine-point loss to the joint league leaders.
The hat-trick of defeats was completed on Sunday afternoon when UG Mystics returned from Cork empty-handed after losing to Glanmire, results which leaves Maigh Cuilinn and Mystics bottom of their respective league tables.
MEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
UG Maree 56
Killester 58
A misfiring offence and a lack of discipline combined to condemn UG Maree to a frustrating defeat at home to Killester on Saturday evening, hardly the kind of preparation Charlie Crowley will have wanted for his side ahead of this weekend’s National Cup final.
The home side were fairly solid on defence – the 58 points they gave up was their second-lowest allowance this season, just ahead of the 46 conceded to Maigh Cuilinn back in November – but their failure to put the ball through the ring at the other end of the court was a major contributor in their downfall.
