WE shared a joke with John Caulfield after Galway United’s win over Wexford FC last Friday that he was becoming something of an Advent Calendar when he pointed out that there are still 28 games to go in the season.
Juts like that childhood favourite that counts down the days to Christmas from December 1st every year, the United manager has been highlighting the number of games left in the season after every one of Galway United’s eight wins so far.
“It was a good win but there are still 28 games to go,” was his latest message on Friday last, following on from the 29 the previous week, and 30 the week before that.
He is trying to check the growing expectation surrounding United this season after their perfect start to the campaign, a start that will be put on the line again this Friday when they welcome Bray Wanderers to Eamonn Deacy Park (7.45pm) in what will be a meeting of the top two in the table.
“You have to,” he replies when asked is it hard to keep a lid on the growing hype after United set a new club record of eight consecutive wins with last Friday’s 4-0 demolition of Wexford at what was a sandy, rather than a sunny, south-east.
“I have been around a long time as a player and in management, and as soon as you become complacent, that is the cancer in football, you start dropping points. You have to be on your game and I always feel if we are on our game, we will win most of our matches.
