MEMORIES of last season’s struggles to win at home occasionally come to mind when Galway United display similiar difficulties in the current campaign. However, they are currently operating at a different level and while some games pose challenges for a spell, faith in the side is normally restored by the finish.
Friday night’s First Division contest against Longford Town could be classed as a typical example, An opening half of dominance gained no reward, before two quick goals on the resumption laid the foundation for yet another impressive home success. United have won all ten of their games at the Dyke Road venue this season, scoring 35 goals in the process and conceding only three. As a comparision, second placed Waterford have dropped ten points on their home soil.
While the win over the Midlands outfit was expected, what was not was the defeat of Waterford who went down by 1-0 away against Cobh Ramblers with Galway United loanee Wilson Waweru scoring the match winner. That outcome left John Caulfield’s charges 13 points clear at the top of the table and in a great position to secure the one automatic promotion spot to the Premier Division.
The game presented a bit of an unknown quantity as the players returned from their mid-season break and manager Caulfield made two changes to the starting eleven that had seen off Wexford by 2-0 in their last game. Conor O’Keeffe returned in place of Evan O’Connor at right full, while former Longford player Darren Clarke got a rare start ahead of Francely Lomboto. However, it was a disappointing outing for the winger as he collected a few knocks before departing the fray injured after just 18 minutes when replaced by Lomboto.
