Summer drought begins to bite

GROWTH has practically stopped on all grazed down areas in many parts of Galway resulting from our dry spell of weather which is now well into its sixth week.

Grass recovery has been noticeably stunted over the past 10-days or so with the exception of peaty soils where more moisture is being retained.

The Dept. of Agriculture and Coillte have also advised the public to be aware of the dangers of starting a fire in gorse or wooded areas.

Last week, up to six fire brigade units had to deal with a massive gorse fire on the edge of Galway city at Tonabrocky in the Rahoon area.

Firemen fought the blaze – which started at around 4pm on Wednesday, June 7 last – for over 12-hours with fears at one stage that nearby residents would have to be evacuated.

Coillte has also advised that all outdoor use of fires, barbeques and open ignitions source should be avoided on forest lands or in other high-risk gorse areas.

“The need for increased vigilance at this time cannot be overstated. Forest owners, farmers, rural dwellers and other countryside users are asked to be extremely vigilant regarding fire activity.

“They should report any suspicious or illegal activity to the Gardai and to report all fires immediately to the Fire and Emergency Services via 112/999,” Coillte stated.
