Galway 1-11
Cork 1-10
Eanna O’Reilly at Páirc Uí Chaoimh
THE Galway senior camogie team qualified for the National League final after edging out Cork by the narrowest of margins at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday. Cathal Murray’s side set up a repeat of last year’s decider against the same opponents, and a chance to defend the title the Tribeswomen claimed last year.
Having already qualified for the final, the Leesiders started with a somewhat experimental line up. It was the visitors who had the best of the opening quarter, after which they lead by 0-5 to 0-2, despite playing against the wind.
Carrie Dolan pointed two early frees, either side of an Amy O’Connor point for the Rebels, to make it 0-2 to 0-1 after seven minutes. The hard working Sabina Rabbitte then set up Ailish O’Reilly with a good pass, and O’Reilly slotted over neatly from the right wing.
Within a minute, Cork’s Fiona Keating did the spadework for Sorcha McCartin, who pointed from the left wing. Galway continued to dominate, and Dolan punished two defensive fouls by the home side to make it 0-5 to 0-2. The Clarinbridge sharpshooter then landed a good effort from play after intercepting a loose Cork clearance.
Cork midfielder Saoirse McCarthy then thundered into the game, landing three consecutive points from play. McCarthy’s first came after a good pass from Laura Hayes, and she followed up with two more, after some poor turnovers in defence by Galway.
A harsh call by referee Liz Dempsey saw Shauna Healy penalised for a defensive foul, which O’Connor converted to level the contest. The sides retired at the interval all square at 0-6 apiece.
