Adrian Morrissey struck 1-11 as Liam Mellows secured an emphatic win over an outgunned Ahascragh/Fohenagh side on Sunday afternoon.
This game went along expected lines as firm favourites Liam Mellows flexed their muscles with Morrissey and Tadhg Haran hitting 1-17 between them. The latter struck six points, all from play, with the duo the game’s outstanding performers as Mark Hughes and Sean Morrissey starred in defence while Jack Forde also proved lively.
Ahascragh/Fohenagh used Luke Cosgrove as a sweeper but they were faced with two big problems: Liam Mellows’ accuracy from range, and their own struggles to win primary possession in an attack that was outnumbered.
After frustrating the city side for the first 10 minutes, Liam Mellows produced an excellent display of shooting from range, especially in the opening half as they struck 0-16 and just three efforts wide of the mark.
Despite the outcome, Ahascragh/Fohenagh managed to frustrate their opponents in the early stages, moving 1-3 to 0-3 in front after 10 minutes. Despite Jack Hastings, Morrissey and Haran finding the target, Padraic Mannion struck 1-1 with his brother Cathal firing two points. Padraic’s goal came after a terrific pass by Cathal found the Galway wing-back who fired to the roof of the net.
Padraic almost found the net again as he fielded his younger brother’s sideline cut but the Liam Mellows defence managed to snuff out his goal-bound efforts.
Jeff Lynkey’s side outscored Ahascragh/Fohenagh by 0-10 to 0-1 in a prolific 20-minute spell. Morrissey struck five of those with Haran (two), Conor Elwood, Sean Morrissey and Ronan Elwood all finding the target with Cathal Mannion’s free Ahascragh/Fohenagh’s sole response.
