The Marine Institute has appointed Dr Glenn Nolan as Director of Marine Environment and Food Safety Services.
Dr Nolan will lead teams working in Fish Health, Marine Environmental Chemistry, Shellfish Safety, Quality Control, Benthos Science and Licensing Advisory Services, and Marine Spatial Planning.
He will focus on ensuring these services work closely together and on fostering the ongoing development of scientific and advisory expertise.
“It is a great honour to be joining colleagues as Director of Marine Environment and Food Safety Services as we strive to enhance the services that the Marine Institute provides to a wide range of clients and users across the marine domain in Ireland,” said Dr Nolan.
A graduate in oceanography from the University of Galway, Dr Nolan joined the Marine Institute in 2003.
His contributions have secured substantial marine research and development projects, funded through national and European programmes such as Interreg, Framework 7, and Horizon 2020.
These research projects have been crucial to advancing Ireland’s ocean observing and forecasting capabilities.
Beyond his scientific career, Dr Nolan has also supported community development as the Chairperson of SCCUL Enterprises CLG, providing support to local businesses as well as social and well-being services on the east side of Galway City.
He continues to share his expertise through teaching roles at the Atlantic Technological University and the University of Malta, where he lectures on marine science at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
“Glenn brings a wealth of experience in Irish and international marine and environmental science and industry,” said Dr Rick Officer, CEO of the Marine Institute.
“His strategic insight and professional expertise will be vital in advancing our mission to safeguard Ireland’s marine environment and uphold the highest standards in seafood safety.”
