Graduates celebrate screening of films and documentaries

Oscar-nominated film director Lenny Abrahamson sent a personal message to Film and Documentary students of Galway Community College of Further Education on Monday to mark their graduate screening event.
The greeting, which officially launched their celebration at the city’s Eye Cinema, was organised by course tutor, Colleen Quinn-Hendrick
Galway Community College of Further Education offers two courses for budding film makers and film fans in its PLC centre, as Colleen explains.
The Level 5 Film and Documentary course and the Level 6 TV Presenting and Film Production course have been running for over 15 years under her guidance. Both are QQI accredited. Colleen, who has extensive film experience, industry connections and knowledge, has a project-based approach, allowing students to develop independently and collaboratively.
Students on the Documentary and Film course learn about Film Production, Script Writing, Television and Film Editing, Voice Production for Broadcasting, Media Analysis and Event Production. Using industry-standard film and audio equipment and editing suites, they get in-depth training onsite. Then they hone their skills on individual and group projects.
The Level 6 Mobile Journalism and Film Production course introduces students to all aspects of film and television, on both sides of the camera. Modules include Film and Digital Video Production, Editing Practice and Techniques, TV and Film Production Design, Documentary Production, Research and Reporting for Digital Media and Broadcasting Presentation Skills. Students develop and present documentary and film pitches as part of their assessments. Chosen projects, produced by the entire class, receive a red-carpet premiere in the Eye Cinema every May, as per Monday. Past students and industry contacts regularly mentor these projects and several have featured in the Galway Film Fleadh, with one winning Best Documentary Film in 2014.
