The Galway senior footballers recorded their first win of the 2023 National Football League campaign with a workmanlike performance in round three against an underwhelming Tyrone on a wet and windy Sunday in Tuam.
Make no mistake, this was a pressure test. Having spurned winning hands in their opening two matches – the draw with Mayo away and one-point defeat at home to Roscommon – the Tribesmen desperately needed points in the highly competitive environment of Division One.
And despite being without key players, Pádraic Joyce’s charges handled the pressure admirably to secure a much-deserved – and badly needed – three-point victory.
The best team in the country in 2021, Tyrone may not be operating at that level now, but they still posed a serious threat with a starting line-up that included 10 All-Ireland medallists from two seasons ago.
Lose, and Galway was plunged into a relegation scrap. That, and all the self-doubt, and outside negativity that goes with it, was the last thing they wanted.
The opposite is true, too. Having overcome a huge obstacle, Galway travels to Letterkenny this Sunday full of self-assurance that they can topple Donegal in their own backyard.
And the confidence is merited. When Tyrone made a match of it early in the second-half, had the home side on the back foot and twice came within a point of their opponents in the third quarter, Galway’s character was questioned.
But they responded in spades, taking control of the kick-out battle and hitting six unanswered scores in a devastating period that killed Tyrone’s spirit.
