In need at Christmas
Genuine charity never had so strong an appeal in the city as at this Christmas time. Never before were the poor of Galway in such need. The fishing season is described as the worst for half a century; there is no employment, and, notwithstanding every inducement of the shopkeepers, trade has not been anything like former years.
Those who had a measure of riches – for them – during the great war, have now spent all their savings, and are existing on starvation diet. Since the union amalgamation scheme, mendicancy is rampant in the town, but that is no evidence whatever of the poverty line on which many who never beg are living. The St. Vincent de Paul Societies know only too well that there are homes in dire want this winter, children without sufficient food.
And the demands made upon the societies are so great that they are not able to meet them as they would wish. Therefore, they ask our help. Shall it be lightly withheld at this time? The coal fund, too, demands assistance. The appeal made by the Urban Council and by the city clergy should be hearkened to by every single person who has anything to spare.
