THERE will be a strong Gaelic football theme when the 2022 Medtronic Galway Sports Stars are presented with their awards on Friday night, January 20, in the Galway Bay Hotel.
One of the county’s GAA legends Tommy Joe Gilmore will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of a great career which saw the Cortoon native line out in three All-Ireland football finals in the seventies and win two All-Star awards.
It will be a night of double celebration for Maigh Cuilinn. Galway captain Seán Kelly has been chosen as the Footballer of the Year and his club is being feted for their outstanding success at both senior and minor level.
Two honours are also going the way of Kilkerrin/Clonberne. Nicola Ward is winning the Ladies Football award for a second time, while the double All-Ireland champions will be collecting the Team of the Year accolade.
The Galway minor footballers pulled off a seemingly impossible feat by rallying to win the All-Ireland title after suffering three defeats in the provincial championship. The man at the helm is the Manager of the Year Alan Glynn.
Though St Thomas’ will be still nursing regret over their below-par display in the recent All-Ireland Club semi-final, it doesn’t detract from another season of terrific scoring exploits from Conor Cooney, who is the county’s top hurler for the second year in succession.
2022 was also a memorable year for Ronan Grimes (Para Cycling) and Katie O’Brien (Rowing) who both have overcome adversity to claim world titles in their respective sports.
