From this week's Galway City Tribune
From this week’s Galway City Tribune – A local councillor has reiterated calls to have major roadworks take place outside peak hours as early morning stoppages lead to chaos on the school run.
Cllr Níall McNelis said early morning works at Kingston Road and at Devon Park in Salthill were causing consternation on the roads.
The watermains replacement works were essential, he said, but a delay in getting started earlier in the summer was leading to a nightmare for parents bringing their children to school.
“The works began two weeks ago, but they were supposed to start on August 2 and they were delayed for whatever reason.
“The result is that they are continuing now that the schools are back and while I understand that they have to be done, the stop-and-go system is creating a disaster in the mornings,” said Cllr McNelis.
He said he had already requested that works take place in off-peak hours, but contractors on site were continuing to commence before 9am, creating bedlam due to increased traffic in the last week.
