Derry 1-13
Galway 0-4
DERRY exacted revenge for their semi-final defeat a year earlier as they ran out comfortable winners over reigning All-Ireland champions Galway in Páirc Sean Mac Diarmada at the quarter-final stage last Saturday.
It was a below par effort from the Tribesmen who never managed to seriously compete with their opponents. And while they withstood six late points in 2022 to reach the final, they exited this term a man down before dropping another half a dozen scores.
“We did not do ourselves any favours how we played,” admitted Galway manager Alan Glynn afterwards. “It’s like a hangover from the Connacht Final (defeat to Mayo) or something that just kind of seeped into our play again today. We just coughed up such easy possession.”
Eamon Young’s goal on 15 minutes gave Derry a buffer that was never threatened. Galway couldn’t live with their opponents even if they were only 1-7 to 0-4 down approaching the three-quarter mark.
Then their best goal chance eluded them as link-up play between Shay McGlinchey and Ciarán Mulhern finished with an over exuberant pass bouncing over substitute Padraic Faherty and harmlessly into Derry hands.
But while the Ulster champions cleared their lines, Ross Coen, guilty of a late shoulder in the first half, again mistimed a block down the left flank A black card followed the earlier yellow for the Corofin centre back leaving Galway to finish with 14 players.
Quite simply, Galway never got to the pitch of the game. A talented group of under-17s, already without injured forwards Jack Heneghan and Sean Walsh, couldn’t get their hands on the ball. And when they did, they dropped scoring chances short or allowed Derry overturn possession.
