FARMERS should not have any problems with the Fertiliser Register which clicks into place from September 1 next, according to Galway IFA Environment representative Henry Walsh.
He said that Irish farmers did not have any issue as regards excessive fertiliser use with the cost factor alone ensuring that a prudent approach was being adopted in terms of the rates of spreading.
“The National Fertiliser Database is now part of Irish law but I wouldn’t envisage this being an issue for any farmer. It is just a matter of each farmer being registered as a fertiliser end user with the purchases directly linked to the herd number,” said Henry Walsh.
He added that even as things stood now, Irish farmers were well on their way to meeting the 2030 Green Deal target of a 20% reduction in fertiliser use.
“As well as the environmental aspect of this target, it also makes good economic sense to only use the fertiliser that’s required. Regular soil testing also plays a critical role in getting the best results from fertiliser usage.
