Having just taken over as leaders of the Premier Division for the first time following their win over their joint fellow table toppers Athenry last week, Salthill Devon were this week crowned champions without kicking a ball as their closest rivals failed to collect all the points on offer in their last game in midweek.
Athenry’s failure to beat St Bernard’s mean they have finished the season two points behind a Devon side that still has a game left to play, away to Colga which is scheduled to be played on Saturday week.
While the situation at the top is clear cut and sorted, matters are much more complex in the lower of the table where relegation is an issue. West United and Corrib Celtic are the bottom two for now, with St Bernard’s, Hibernians and Renmore are all enjoying a slender advantage over them as matters stand.
There are just seven matches left to be played in the division and apart from the Colga and Salthill Devon game, the other six are all involving teams in or just above the relegation zone.
Bottom side West need to win their last two games to at best force a play-off to stay in the division – anything less and they are gone. It is the same story with Corrib Celtic – who ironically have won their last two games, after only winning one of their previous 14.
The meeting of West United and Hibernians in South Park at 11am this Sunday will have a crucial bearing on what the outcome could be in the relegation area.
