The director of Galway’s Decadent Theatre Company, Andrew Flynn, and Cork actor, Denis Conway, “had been trying to work together for years, but we kept missing each other”, says Denis of their ongoing attempts. That was rectified last year when Denis appeared in Martin McDonagh’s The Lonesome West in the Gaiety Theatre, which Andrew directed.
And their partnership is continuing to blossom this year.
Denis has just finished a run of Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen, a co-production between the Gaiety and Decadent, in which he played publican and hangman, Harry Wade, a celebrity in his hometown of Oldham in North England because he’s an executioner.
Now, Denis is appearing in Decadent Theatre’s revival of From a Low and Quiet Sea, which is visiting Galway next week as part of a national tour.
Adapted from Donal Ryan’s novel of the same name, the play premiered at last year’s Galway International Arts Festival and, like Hangmen, it was a critical success.
Denis didn’t feature in that production – although he had helped out during the early days of rehearsals by filling in when another actor wasn’t available.
This time, he’s right in the mix, taking on the role of John, which was previously played by Lorcan Cranitch – he’s currently appearing in Ghosts at the Abbey Theatre.
From a Low and Quiet Sea is a play about four lost souls, each searching for a version of home. Denis praises its author Donal Ryan as being “like a townie John McGahern”.
