From this week's Galway City Tribune
From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Insurance claims for trips and falls on the city’s footpaths have cost Galway City Council in excess of €2.5m over four years, new figures reveal.
Personal injury compensation for injuries sustained on the city’s footpaths average around €20,000 per claim, not including legal fees.
The Council has confirmed it settled 124 claims for footpath injuries over four years, including 42 in 2019; 32 in 2020; 27 in 2021; and 23 in 2022.
The gross value of claims in each year was €680,726 in 2019; €980,645 in 2020; €401,054 in 2021; and €442,532 in 2022.
There were four claims settled in the first quarter of 2023, amounting to a total of €86,422 in compensation.
The Council released the data to Councillor Niall McNelis (Labour).
“This shows the day of the big payouts is gone. It also shows there were not as many falls or slips as I thought there might be in the city,” he said.
