A Galway man was awarded the prestigious ‘best soldier’ award for his effort and dedication in training at a special passing out ceremony held in Dun Uí Mhaolíosa Barracks in Renmore.
21-year-old Ian O’Halloran from Athenry received praise for his wide range of different qualities that he brought to the platoon at the ceremony on Thursday last.
“Private O’Halloran has proved over the course of this training that he is a reliable, capable soldier, with excellent levels of physical fitness, drive and a positive attitude,” said Master of Ceremonies, Ciarán Higgins.
He was amongst 35 soldiers at the passing out ceremony and parade.
Private O’Halloran was confident in himself but said he still got a surprise when he won the award.
“I knew I had a good chance of getting it. There were a few other lads that could’ve won it, but the better man won in the end I think.”
