The life of the late Fr Pat O’Brien, priest, poet and human rights activist, will be celebrated with an evening of music and song in Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop, Galway City, next Friday, October 21.
Pat’s untimely death last November was felt not only by his family and parishioners in Caherlistrane but also by his friends in Galway’s arts community. They have organised this event to celebrate his life and commitment to the arts, especially to poetry.
Originally from Claremorris, Pat was PP in Caherlistrane at the time of his death, having previously served in Skehana and on Clare Island.
Next Friday’s event will centre on the publication of his previously unpublished long poem, At the Centre for Human Rights, San Salvador, which will be launched by writer and Latin American expert, Dr Peadar Kirby.
Pat wrote it following a trip to El Salvador and Nicaragua in 1983 with two other Irish priests. He also recorded their experiences in a diary, which was later published as a book.
