City and County Community Response hubs to be stood down

The City Community Response hubs set up in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn are to be stood down.

These facilities, which included showers, were put in place in community centres in Westside, Knocknacarra and Renmore following the Storm.

The city council, which co-ordinated the response, says as power is now restored in the city and surrounding county area, these hubs will be stood down.

It adds that clean ups are continuing around Galway City, by the City Council and other agencies.

The County Council has also confirmed that its hubs are also winding down in line with power being restored.

The public is asked to continue reporting issues with electricity, telephone poles or cables or water supply to the relevant authority.

The former All Star hurler and community stalwart died in an accident at his home on Friday clearing storm debris

The 61-year-old was an All-Ireland winner with Galway in 1988, and later that year took his club Abbeyknockmoy to their first and only Galway senior hurling title

Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council Martina Kinnane has arranged for a book of condolence be opened in the council foyer and also online

Michael Coleman is survived by his wife Mary, daughter Sinead and son Dara and a wide circle of family, friends and the sporting community

Claddagh Watch is to run extra patrols over the next few nights the University of Galway’s RAG Week now underway untl Friday

The Raise and Give campaign is aimed at raising funds for the Galway Rape Crisis Centre and Galway Autism Partnership.

Extra Garda patrols are also in place following consultation with the universities, student unions, resident and community groups, publicans, off-licence operators and Galway City Council.

Cllr Niall McNelis says Claddagh Watch volunteers provide a vital service:

Anti-social behavior taskforce to be established in Ballinasloe

A new anti-social behavior taskforce is to be established in Ballinasloe.

The taskforce is being set up by Galway County Council working with Gardaí and local stakeholders.

Councillor Alan Harney says it’s unacceptable that some people are essentially “getting away” with the same behaviors in the same locations time after time.

Fine Gael Councillor Harney says a huge aspect of efforts to combat anti-social behavior will be the rollout of CCTV.

Teen pleads guilty to attempted murder of Defence Forces chaplain in Renmore

A 17-year-old has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Defence Forces chaplain Fr Paul Murphy, who suffered multiple stab wounds following an attack in Renmore last year.

At a brief arraignment this afternoon at the Central Criminal Court, the teenager replied guilty to the count of attempted murder at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa, Renmore Barracks on August 15, 2024.

The defendant was 16 at the time of the attack in Renmore, and cannot be identified due to his age.

Mr Justice Paul McDermott requested a probation report from Oberstown Detention Centre and adjourned the matter to March 7, when a date for a sentencing hearing will be set.

Fr Murphy, who’s in his fifties suffered multiple stab wounds in the attack which took place while he sat in his car

He was treated for his injuries at University Hospital Galway and will be invited to make a victim impact statement to the court.

Boil Water Notices lifted in Dunmore and Glenamaddy

The Boil Notices on the Dunmore/Glenamaddy and Glenamaddy Public Water Supplies have been lifted

They affected approximately 3,000 customers, including those on several Group Water Schemes: Boyounagh/Ballyedmond, Brookloon, Cloonkeen, Garrafrauns, Grange, Cathill and Kilmascahill.

Following consultation with the Health Service Executive, customers on these supplies can now resume normal use of the water

The notices were issued on Sunday, 26 January due to a risk of deterioration in the raw water quality entering the Dunmore Gortgarrow Treatment Plant in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn.

Anne Rabbitte says "let there be no doubt" she will run in next General Election

Senator Anne Rabbitte says there is “no doubt” she will run in the next General Election.

Fianna Fail Senator Rabbitte served two terms as a Galway East TD between 2016 and 2024, but fell considerably short in the General Election last November.

She then ran in the recent Seanad elections but failed to secure a seat, and was then selected as one of the Taoiseach’s nominees.

Senator Rabbitte was asked by John Morley what she makes of commentary that the Seanad is just a “holding pen” until the next elections.

Galway's public hospitals remain under pressure with over 80 patients on trolleys

Galway’s public hospitals remain under considerable pressure with more than 80 patients on trolleys this morning.

UHG and Portiuncula Hospital have struggled with high attendances in recent weeks amid surges in flu and RSV cases.

At UHG today, there are 60 patients without a bed – the second highest figure nationwide.

Meanwhile, there are 21 patients on trolleys at Portiuncula, which is an atypically high figure for the smaller hospital.
