The Strawboys’ tradition is getting a modern twist as dance artist Rob Heaslip presents a new, vibrant pop-up work across Galway this July and August.
Strawboys is an energetic outdoor performance that blurs the lines between traditional and contemporary dance and music, while paying homage to the traditions and costumes of the Wren Boys and Mummers who once paraded through the streets, towns and fields of Ireland.
Pop-up performances of Strawboys have been running throughout County Galway all week and will continue until this Saturday, July 30.
It’s being performed at Connemara West Centre, Letterfrack, at 12pm; and in Keogh’s, Ballyconneely, at 2.30pm this Thursday, July 28. The performance will be in Roundstone Town Hall at 12pm this Friday, July 29; and at Gurteen / Dog’s Bay (the grassed area between the two beaches) at 2.30pm. On Saturday, Strawboys will be at Peacock’s Hotel, Maam Cross, at 12pm; and in Corribdale Park, Oughterard, at 2.30pm.
Then, from August 2 to 13, it will be performed across Galway City, in a variety of streets, carparks, community centres, greens and parks.
Unsuspecting audiences will see a strawboy enter a location, before being joined by the rest of the cast to perform a highly percussive and visual work where also features lively Balkan music.
