Galway United have been hungry for goals this season: 96 scored in the league, another 13 in the cup, with 17 different players getting on the scoresheet.

Rob Slevin is one of the 17 players to have scored for the club this season, and the Cork-born defender is hoping to add at least one more to his tally in the final game of the season tonight when Galway United host Wexford FC on a night when the club will be presented with the First Division trophy.

“I haven’t had a goal in a while, I don’t know if the scar will thank me for it if I head one in, it would be nice to get another goal before the end of the year and be nice to hit the 100 goal mark,” says Slevin, the scar in question being the nasty gash above his left eye which he picked up in a clash of heads in the 6-0 win over Athlone Town last month.

He has made 36 appearances for United this season, scoring four goals, the most recent of which was in the 2-2 draw away to his former club, Finn Harps, back on August 4, but he smiles at the suggestion that United have the magical 100 league goals as a main target tonight.

“There has been no chat of that. We did our job [against Treaty], we scored four goals, but the most important things is to win. I’d rather win the next day than having a 4-4 draw to get to 100 goals!” he laughs.

United have been racking up records at a rate of knots this season: their 92-point tally is the biggest in the 102-year history of the league, as is the 96 goals they have scored.

They have won every home game this season, and another there points tonight will see them become the sixth club to complete a season with a 100% home record; while they have now matched the all-time league record for consecutive home wins.

That number currently stands at 18: the play-off home-leg win over Longford Town at the end of last season, and the 17 league games this season. That matches the league record set across the 2016 and 2017 season by Cork City, who were managed at the time by none other than John Caulfield, so United are on the brink of setting a new record tonight.
