Prodigal, a play about Andy and his estranged father Benny who are reunited after the tragic death of Andy’s brother Seán, will be staged at the studio space of the city’s Town Hall Theatre from next Tuesday to Thursday, October 29 to 31, at 8.30pm nightly.
Written by Andrew Carney and performed by Tom Carney and Andrew Carney, Prodigal is set in a bar following Seán’s funeral. Son and father are struggling to come to terms with their loss, and examining their own pasts as they try to work out what brought them here, while making the first tentative steps toward reconnection.
The one-hour, one-act play was first performed in August 2018 and returned to the Galway Fringe Festival the following Summer, winning the Best New Writing award.
It was subsequently staged in Gibbon’s of Ballinasloe and as a guest of the Stage Works’ Summer drama course, hosted in Athlone in that year.
It was revived after Covid, with performances in Galway and Mayo, culminating in a trip to Wimbledon last April, where it was staged for the South London Irish Association, with a return visit in October, before being presented in Coventry.
Also in Summer 2023, Andrew and Tom linked up with the UK based charity Stamp Out Suicide touring to venues in Warrington, Liverpool and Manchester where it received a great response. Prodigal is for people aged 15+. Tickets €12 from tht.ie, 091-569777 or the box office.
