Partland paints pictures in words and melodies

Groove Tube with Cian O’Connell

Galway-based singer/songwriter Thomas McPartland has been tinkering with his sophomore album, The Empty Atlantic, for the guts of four years – and in that time, it has shifted and evolved into as much of a visual project as it is an LP.

Each track on the record will eventually be accompanied by a music video upon its release, and as was the case with folk-pop anthem After the Movie twelve months ago, Partland’s latest effort features a scrupulously crafted stop motion video to tell its story.

Don’t Shoot Me Those Baby Blues is out this Friday. It tells the story of a chance meeting with a former partner and its video includes a series of beautifully drawn Galway landmarks. It is a typically smooth and melodic track, aided by gentle percussion and background lead lines.

As Partland – his music persona – explains, the creative process involved with stop motion took some getting used to.

“I did it over the lockdown,” he recalls. “I’d made a few at that point so I was kind of getting to grips with the artform and finding out how to do it. For more, read this week’s Connacht Tribune.
