JAMIE Murphy bookended this senior football championship contest on Saturday with three point contributions to ensure Tuam Stars secured their second win in Group 1
The 2005 All-Ireland U21 winner was quickest into proceedings with three white flags in the first 10 minutes, but it was his three late frees that ultimately ensured Kevin Reidy’s charges the spoils.
Tuam Stars were the better team and An Spidéal didn’t reach the heights of when nearly turning over Moycullen the previous weekend. But with an ever growing injury list that had three additions over this hour, Tomas Costello’s squad can make a claim to be the unluckiest team in Galway currently.
Athenry was roasting and the water breaks returned but one of the most experienced campaigners seemed to revel in the conditions. Murphy was involved from the start and a kick from the left on two minutes got Tuam Stars off the mark.
And it could have been much better for the 2019 finalists when Gavan Connell played in Cormac McWalter on seven minutes. Amazingly, their championship’s top scorer drew a blank here but that would have been different were it not for keeper Maghnus Breathnach’s save.
