GALWAY took a giant stride closer to securing a place in the NFL Division One final and a trip to Croke Park as they beat an underwhelming Waterford side in Dungarvan on Saturday. The Galway defence laid the platform for this victory with Waterford kicking just three points from play.
As Galway secured all three points on their travels, they remain unbeaten and lie second in the table, two points behind Kerry. With the top two sides progressing through to the League final on Saturday, April 15, this win was a major boost to Galway’s chances of competing for silverware at GAA HQ.
Maghnus Breathnach and Fiona Wynne’s charges lie four points ahead of Dublin while they sit six points ahead of Cork and Waterford. With Galway having beaten those trio of teams and the head to head rule being used to separate any two sides level on points, this was a significant win.
A victory against Mayo on March 19 next time out will ensure they travel to Croke Park for a league decider against a Kerry side who have already booked their ticket to National GAA headquarters. Before a ball was kicked in anger, this appeared to be a battle between Waterford’s attack with a keen eye for goal and Galway’s defence.
The home side had found the back of the net in each of their four league games to date with Pat Sullivan’s side kicking exactly 2-9 in each of their outings against Cork, Mayo and Donegal. Meanwhile, Galway had kept three clean sheets in their previous four outings although they had shipped four goals against Cork seven days prior to this contest.
