Turloughmore win 4-3 on penalties
AFTER serving up a thriller three weeks earlier in the first instalment, Turloughmore and Sarsfields produced another dramatic tale last Saturday before the former were crowned county under 20 A hurling champions.
Goalkeeper Darragh Walsh was the hero. Three important saves in over 80 minutes of action kept his team involved; he added three more during the penalty shoot-out while also converting his two strikes to give Brian Holland’s team the trophy.
While everyone in Athenry was unanimous that the quality and excitement on fare was worthy of admittance, they were also in full agreement that this isn’t a way to end a county final, especially an underage decider.
Yes, dates on the calendar are at a premium but surely extra-time could have been played the first day. And surely, a gap would have opened up in the next few weeks to allow these two teams complete their trilogy.
Gearoid Fahy set up Éanna Ó Loingsigh for Turloughmore’s opening score inside 35 seconds before John Cooney’s long range Sarsfields free levelled in the fifth minute. When Tom Nolan put Turloughmore back ahead, Alex Connaire provided the response on seven minutes.
Leon Connaire gave Sarsfields the lead for the first time before Eoghan Conneely restored parity. Then the first crucial goal for the New Inn/Bullaun outfit arrived on 11 minutes.
