St. Colman’s 2-7
Liam Mellows 0-12
Eanna O’Reilly at Duggan Park
ST. Colman’s edged out Liam Mellows by the narrowest of margins in a gripping Junior A camogie final in Ballinasloe on Sunday. It was a tremendous victory for the South Galway club, who were previously amalgamated with Kinvara at adult level after struggling to field a team in recent years. Those struggles were put well and truly behind them on Sunday, and they can now look forward to intermediate camogie in 2023.
Liam Mellows battled bravely to the finish, but just came up short when star forward Róisín Hughes’ last minute free drifted wide. The city side lacked nothing in terms of character and endeavour, and with a bit more luck the result could have gone their way.
Played in terrible weather conditions, with constant heavy rainfall throughout, the sides served up a very physical and closely fought contest. Rachel Burke opened the scoring for St. Colman’s with an excellent point, before Sinéad Minihan equalised for Mellows with an impressive score.
Rachel Linnane edged St. Colman’s back in front, before two frees from Róisín Hughes saw Mellows take the lead in the eighth minute. Hughes and Chelsea Nolan (free) traded scores at either end before Colman’s got the opening goal. Ciara Helebert’s shot from distance dipped beneath the crossbar, just over the head of Mellows’ ‘keeper Ciara O’Sullivan.
Mellows had the chance to get a goal of their own two minutes later, when Niamh McPeake broke through Colman’s defence. However, McPeake’s shot, and a follow up effort from Minihan, were well saved by Emer Gantley.
