A Galway-based adventure athlete aiming to swim the a substantial part of Ireland’s coastline this summer completed an epic open water sea swim off the west coast last week – from the Blackrock Tower in Salthill to Inis Mór.
Daragh Morgan completed his Aran Islands swim over two days – swimming for six hours a day in the Atlantic – last Thursday and Friday.
He was accompanied by a Galway Hooker support boat, thanks to Bádóiri An Cladaig, and a RIB raft for safety – but the crossing turned out to be straightforward for the Dublin native.
“Fortunately, the weather was excellent and very good progress was made on both days arriving in Inis Mor on the Friday afternoon,” he said.
Daragh is originally from Dublin but based, working and living in Galway City for the past five years.
He is a University of Galway graduate, having completed a Masters Degree in Agri Innovation and – when he’s on running the roads or swimming the seas – he works with Innocent Drinks.
This is all part of a larger project which he is calling Swim Eire, to swim around 1,600km of Ireland’s coastline throughout the summer months – in an effort to raise awareness and funds for RNLI and Simon Communities of Ireland as well as completing a significant challenge.
It’s not his first major challenge into and out of the west; he has completed three 14km swims of Galway Bay, and he has cycled the 220km Galway to Dublin run three times – as well as running it once in 36 hours in 2023.
