Book lovers of all ages will be catered for at the 17th annual Ennis Book Club Festival which runs from Friday to Sunday, March 3-5.
Highlights include an interview with English author Tessa Hadley on Saturday March 4, at 8.30pm in Glór Theatre. Her latest novel, Free Love, published by Penguin Books, is set in the 1960s as it explores what happens when a married woman falls for a much younger man and how their relationship affects her and those around her.
Hadley has been described by The Washington Post as ‘one of the greatest stylists alive’. This is her eighth novel since her first, Accidents in the Home, was published when she was 46, following years of rejection for other manuscripts. But she persevered and her books have since been praised for their forensic observation of family life, and for capturing the drama of the everyday. Fans include Marian Keyes and the late Hilary Mantel. Hadley has also published three collections of short stories and has been a contributor to The New Yorker since 2002.
Festival events on Friday, March 3, will include Meeting Eavan Boland, celebrating the life and legacy of one of Ireland’s finest poets. This will feature poets Nessa O’Mahony, John O’Donnell and Annemarie Ní Churreáin in conversation with journalist Olivia O’Leary and is at 2pm in the Temple Gate Hotel.
Following that, at 4pm in the same venue, local author Seán O’Driscoll will discuss his acclaimed book about English heiress and academic Rose Dugdale, who dedicated her life to the IRA. Joining him for an exploration of the book, Heiress, Rebel, Vigilante, Bomber: The Extraordinary Life of Rose Dugdale, will be the chair of the book festival, Martina Durac.
