IN games such as this Minor B1 final replay, mini scoring bursts can often prove decisive. That proved to be the case on Saturday afternoon as 1-2 without reply at the start of the second half propelled Rahoon-Newcastle/Barna-Furbo to county honours.
With the sides level six times in the opening half, two Luke Carroll frees at the start of the final half gave Rahoon/Barna the biggest lead of the game up until that point before the decisive goal came in the 36th minute. Carroll fielded a Liam Mellows restart before his ball down the line found Cillian Murphy.
The attacker drove forward before playing a clever stick pass in to the onrushing Sean Dunne, who turned inside and rifled an effort to the roof of the net. This gave Rahoon/Barna a 1-8 to 0-6 lead as they looked set to run away with the game. However, four wides inside the opening seven minutes of the second half meant they were unable to maximise their dominance into scores on the board.
Liam Mellows were living off scraps in the third quarter as they won just two of their first eight restarts in the final half. This meant they were continuously placed on the back foot. Even though their defence made some well times last ditch challenges, they still found themselves five points down before a long range Barry Ford free got them off the mark 10 minutes into the second half.
