Double delight from Sean Shibe Double delight from Sean Shibe

Guitarist Sean Shibe will be in concert at Kilcummin Church, Oughterard, on Sunday, March 5.

The following night, March 6, he will perform in the equally intimate surrounds Druid’s Mick Lally Theatre in Galway City.

The versatile and innovative musician is renowned as both a classical and an electric guitarist – for Galway his focus will be on the classical repertoire.

These concerts are being presented by Music for Galway as part of its Bach series and the diverse programme will include Bach’s Prelude, Fuge and Allegro BWV 998 as well as works by De Falla, Poulenc, the beautiful La Catedral by Barrios and the forceful, wild Habanera by Thomas Hades.

Scottish-Japanese Sean Shibe has achieved many firsts in his career to date. In 2012, he became the first guitarist to be selected for BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists scheme, which nurtures exceptional talent.

From 2012-15 he was supported by the Borletti-Buitoni Trust, an organisation that has been assisting young musicians since 2002. And in 2018, he won the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Young Artists for his debut album Dreams and Fancies: English Music for Solo Guitar. He also received the Leonard Bernstein Award in 2022.

His busy performance schedule includes regular appearances at summer festivals, as well as concerts in cities including New York, London and Munich. He has performed with Hallé Orchestra and National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and tours with Manchester Collective in the UK and Europe.

Sean Shibe is taking part what Music for Galway describes as its Encore concerts, “part of the organisation’s drive towards more sustainability” while also building audiences in the area.

Tickets cost €20 / €18 concession. There is a reduced price of €6 for fulltime students and children, while MfG Friends pay €16.
