Athenry and Hibs setting the early pace in top flight

By Mike Rafferty

Just two teams remain unbeaten in the Premier Division after the opening two rounds of the season, with Athenry and Hibernians leading the way after defending champions Salthill Devon suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to newly-promoted Renmore at the weekend.

Athenry have made a decent start to the season, following up the opening weekend win over Renmore with a 2-1 win over Mervue United in Fahy’s Field on Saturday afternoon. All the goals came in the second-half, with Cole Connolly and Ray Moran scoring for the second week in succession as the visitors went two up, before a Lewis Waweru goal gave the home side a late consolation.

St Bernard’s picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 win over Maree/Oranmore in Abbeyknockmoy. Matt Finn and Jamie Finn got the opening-half goals, before Kody McCann replied for the visitors in the second-half.

Corrib Celtic picked up their first point following a 1-1 draw with West United in Annaghdown. Scoreless at the break, a Keith Greaney penalty put the home side ahead, before Tommy Molloy also responded from the spot for the 10-man city side, as they also got off the mark for the season.
