One of Connacht’s marquee signings during the summer, David Hawkshaw from Leinster, said he was not given any guarantee of a starting position when he moved to the Sportsground and knew he would need to battle for a place.
The 23-years-old said he came west willing to battle for a slot at out-half or in the centre, and doesn’t mind where Andy Friend positions him as he just wants to get game-time.
He’s played in all five games this season, the first two off the bench and then started at out-half against the Bulls; while for the last two games against Munster and former side Leinster, he played at inside centre.
“I wouldn’t have put myself in either bracket,” he replied when asked did he come to Connacht as a centre or out-half.
“The main thing, which I’ve learned throughout the years, is to do whatever you can to get on the pitch and play. I played mostly at 10 growing up and then moved into 12 at U-20s, and was mixing and matching then for a while.
“I would have maybe been a bit more 10 in pre-season, but if they said to me that I’m going to 12, I’m equally as happy to do it. It gives you a bit more time to look and see things, there’s a lot of good stuff that I enjoy from it,” he said.
