A pane of glass on a design feature of the Galway City’s newest bridge has been smashed, possibly by vandals.
Galway City Council said it was aware of the shattered glass at what the designers of the new pedestrian and cycling bridge at Salmon Weir call the “glazed oculus” near the Cathedral.
The new bridge opened to the public in late May, and has proved popular with tourists and locals. It cost around €10 million to complete.
The glass feature, which allows users to see water flowing underneath the bridge, was shattered in the past week.
A City Hall spokesperson said it was aware of the damage, and confirmed to the Galway City Tribune that it would be replaced.
“Galway City Council is aware of this issue and have inspected same. We have not determined whether the damage was as a result of an accident or vandalism. The damaged panel will be replaced,” a Council spokesperson said.
