Galway United 2
UCD 3
A scarcely believable error from goalkeeper Matt Connor three minutes from time saw Galway United crash out of the FAI Cup in a game that could well be a dress rehearsal for the promotion/relegation play-off final in mid-November.
There seemed little danger when Connor – making just his second appearance of the season, both of which came in the Cup – came to the edge of the penalty area to gather a ball which Conor O’Keeffe stopped low to head back to him.
The momentum of the pair saw them collide, and as the goalkeeper went to get to his feet, he somehow let the ball squirt out of his grasp and drop straight at the feet of Daniel Norris, who rolled it to Thomas Lonergan, and the striker hit the ball first time into the unguarded net from the edge of the box as a shell-shocked crowd looked on in stunned silence.
It was the third time United had fallen behind on the night but unlike the other two previous occasions, there was no way back this time, with Francely Lomboto being denied what would have been a deserved third equaliser for United two minutes into injury-time by Kian Moore in the UCD goal.
As a result, United have now lost three games on the spin as a season that started with so much promise with a win away to Cork City back in February – despite playing almost half the game with 10 men – is now threatening to crumble into another campaign of disappointment.
