Galway United 6
Bray Wanderers 0
THERE is a beautiful brutality to Galway United this season as John Caulfield’s side dispatched Bray Wanderers with nonchalance on Friday to complete the first round of games of the season with a 100% record.
It was a meeting of the top two, and there really wasn’t a whole lot between the sides in the first-half, but United displayed a ruthless efficiency that would have made Monty Python’s Spanish Inquisitors proud as they led 3-0 at half-time.
The Wicklow side were more of an attacking threat in the second-half, but that just seemed to poke the bear as United added three more goals to record their biggest-ever win over Wanderers on their way to making it nine wins from nine this season to stretch their lead at the top of the table to 10 points.
We can’t get carried away just yet: Waterford are enjoying a resurgence under new manager, Keith Long, and while they are 10 points back in second, they have a game in hand against a struggling Treaty United which will be played next Monday, and they will be in the title race for the long haul.
United went with the same starting XI in successive games for just the second time this season, while the visitors made two changes, with Alex Moody returning in nets after a one-match ban; while Jake Walker came in on the left side of a front-three for the visitors.
Both sides traded on parity in the opening stages, looking to find their rhythm, and the rival teams were still settling into the game when United took the lead in the 10th minute. A Conor McCormack inswinging corner-kick from the left fell at the feet of Conor O’Keeffe, who continues to shine in an unaccustomed role at left-back.
