UNIVERSITY of Galway Maree continue to lead the way at the top of the Men’s Super League after the weekend action, but Maigh Cuilinn are running out of games in their bid to avoid the relegation play-offs after another defeat.

It is the same story for University of Galway Mystics in the Women’s Super League, as they hit just five points in the final quarter to let a 12-point lead slip to leave them still waiting for a second win of the season.

The cup champions continue to set the pace in both the South Conference, and the league as a whole, after a dominant third quarter set the platform for a comfortable win on the road in the Mercy hall in Sligo on Saturday.

Co-captain Eoin Rockall led by example, finishing with 18 points, but he as well supported in a game in which four other Maree players also hit double figures: Rodrigo Gomez (15), Zvonimir Cutuk (15), Jarrett Haines (14), and Cathal Finn (13).

Maree were just 34-32 ahead with just under two minutes to go in the second quarter, but Charlie Crowley’s side utterly dominated the next 12 minutes or so, and by the end of the third quarter they had stretched 19 clear, leading 68-49.

The home side mounted something of a rally in the final quarter, but Maree were always in control, being able to rest Haines, the recently announced Player of the Month for January, while getting some decent game time into the likes of Zach Light and Matthew Sweeney. Haines’ award saw the side complete an awards’ double, as Crowley was named as the Coach of the Month.
