University of Galway Maree won every quarter in their game against defensing champions Tralee Warriors on Saturday to find themselves as one of just two sides in the Men’s Super League with three wins from three, with Cork’s Neptune being the other.
At the other end of the table there was more disappointment for Maigh Cuilinn as they shipped what appeared to be a heavy defeat away to UCC Demons, but John Cunningham’s youthful side were competitive for much of the game, and with so many homegrown players getting court-time and top-flight experience, it bodes well down the line for them
There was also a third successive defeat for UG Mystics in the Women’s Super League, but Paul O’Brien’s side came agonisingly close to pulling off a shock win as they led by four with four minutes remaining, only to fail to score for the remainder of the game
MEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
UG Maree 90
Tralee Warriors 64
Tipped by some in the game as potential dark horses for honours this year, University of Galway Maree’s dream start to the season continued on Saturday evening as they proved too hot to handle for the defending league champions.
UG Maree never trailed in the game, with Eoin Rockall opening the score with a neat lay-up, the first of eight points the captain scored in the opening quarter as the home side raced into a 21-11 lead at the end of the first quarter against a Tralee side which featured GAA star, Kieran Donaghy.
