ALL of the country’s 13 MEPs have been invited to a public information meeting in Ballinasloe on this coming Sunday to try and clarify the Nature Restoration Law (NRL) proposals currently before various EU forums.
One of the main organisers of the event – Roscommon-Galway Independent TD, Michael Fitzmaurice (pictured) – told the Farming Tribune that the proposals had ‘massive implications’ for the future of farming and especially so in the midlands, western and northwestern regions.
“The basic question that we must now ask ourselves as politicians, is do we want to be the generation of public representatives who could close the door for young farmers through the 2030s – it’s as basic as that,” said Michael Fitzmaurice.
Sunday’s meeting (July 9) in the Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe (1pm) will have Pat O’Toole of the Irish Farmers Journal as ‘moderator’ and will aim to provide as much information as possible on the EU’s NRL proposals involving the rewetting and possible rewilding of land over the coming years. Farm organisations have also been invited to attend.
“One of the main problems here is that farmers and landowners just have no hard information as to what’s coming down the track. The EU Commision’s NRL proposals have been rejected so far by the European Parliament’s agricultural and fisheries committees while the environment committee were deadlocked on a 44-44 vote,” said Michael Fitzmaurice.
