Groove Tube with Cian O’Connell
Somebody’s Child has grown into one of the leading voices in Irish alt-pop since Dubliner Cian Godfrey coined the moniker in 2018. Initially the project was designed to be a songwriting outlet for the multi-instrumentalist, who had no intention of promoting himself as the face of an enterprise. As his music has gained notoriety, though, he has become more comfortable with the public side of his work and the relationship he has forged with fans is testament to that engagement.
Now, on February 3, Cian is set to reach a major milestone with the release of Somebody’s Child’s debut, self-titled album. The LP takes influence from new wave, synth-based 80s bands, and indie rock outfits from the early 2000s like Foals and Arctic Monkeys.
Its launch will be celebrated by a mammoth February/March touring schedule that covers Ireland, Europe and parts of the United States.
On Friday, February 24, Cian and the band play Galway’s Róisín Dubh and before that, on Sunday week, February 5, he will perform a stripped back set at Golden Discs in Eyre Square.
“It’s a scary enough time, I guess,” he says of bringing out a record.
“It’s such a personal thing to bear. It being the debut, it’s built up so much and people tell you not to do it until you have a certain amount of support behind you but ultimately, we wanted to be there creatively, and we thought we were there.
“We wanted to change it up and do something long-form as opposed to continuing just releasing songs. The way we approach music lends itself to an album. We’re just delighted to have so many songs come out properly. It’s been a large part of our lives for the last couple of years and finally having it out there is amazing.
