A former Galway United star came home to the club where he played his underage football at the weekend as part of a drive to encourage youngsters to stay away from gangs.
Galway Hibernians Football Club played host to the ‘Life Premium Against Gangs’ community football match on Sunday.
The event, part of a dynamic initiative to tackle gang involvement and address youth mental health challenges, drew large numbers of young people from across the city.
The initiative has been launched by Francely Lomboto, the former Galway United winger now with Sligo Rovers, and Oshane Malcolm.
Galway City East Councillor Helen Ogbu (Labour) described the event as ‘inspiring’.
“I was immediately on board when I learned about this initiative. Supporting and empowering our young people to stay off the streets and away from gang activity is at the core of my priorities.
“This event not only provides a positive outlet but also reinforces the message that our community stands together against violence and despair.”
She said that special thanks was due to to Francely Lomboto and Oshane Malcolm, whose leadership in setting up the Life Premium Club had made the event possible.
The match also benefitted from the active support of Community Gardaí Kevin Farrelly and Declan Mulligan, along with Garda Juvenile Liaison Officer Ciara Moran. Garda Kevin served as one of the referees.
“This event is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together to promote positive change. The momentum from this football match will help drive further initiatives aimed at engaging young people and strengthening community ties,” said Cllr Ogbu.
