Arts Week with Judy Murphy
It’s going to be an unusual experience for actor Marty Rea when he plays the Town Hall Theatre from August 23-27 in Brian Friel’s classic drama, Translations, a co-production between the Abbey Theatre and Belfast’s Lyric Theatre. Marty is a member of the Druid Ensemble, a core group of Druid actors formed in 2013 after he had appeared in several works with the company, most notably a series of Tom Murphy’s plays.
So, normally when he’s in Galway, it’s with Druid, rehearsing here before a run and “being in work mode”, as he puts it. It’s not that Marty won’t be in work mode for Translations, but it’s a brief visit with the play which has been receiving rave reviews since it opened in Belfast earlier this summer before transferring to the main stage of the Abbey.
The play, set in 1833, in Baile Beag, County Donegal was first performed in 1980 by Field Day Theatre and is a dramatic interrogation of place, language and the impact of words.
Marty plays Manus, the son of hedge-school teacher Hugh in this Irish-speaking community on the cusp of great change – the late Mick Lally played the role in the original production.
