Salthill/ Knocknacarra 1-11
Tuam Stars 2-7
Eanna O’Reilly at Tuam Stadium
SALTHILL/Knocknacarra booked their place in the semi-finals of the senior football championship with a one point win over Tuam Stars on Saturday at Tuam Stadium. John O’Mahony’s side overcame the loss of star player Rob Finnerty during the first half, to hold off a brave effort from a dogged Tuam side, who were slightly unlucky to come away from this quarter-final with nothing.
Kevin Reidy’s players certainly died with their boots on, battling bravely after going down to 13-men in the second half and almost forcing the contest to extra time. A couple of late point scoring efforts didn’t quite come off for the Stars, and Salthill were certainly relieved to get out of Tuam Stadium with the victory.
Playing with a strong wind advantage in the opening half, the city side made a very good start, tallying the first three scores of the game. Rob Finnerty pointed in the opening minute, before Tomo Culhane got his first point within 60 seconds. An excellent counter attacking move involving Finnerty and Brian Conlon then set up Culhane for his second.
Tuam soon had a goal chance at the other end when Brian Mannion’s low shot went narrowly outside the left hand post. The Stars got off the mark two minutes later as Jamie Murphy pointed his first free of the afternoon.
