University of Galway Maree have guaranteed themselves a home quarter-final in the post-season play-offs, as their win over Ballincollig in the university’s sports centre on Saturday means they are guaranteed to finish in the top two of Conference South in the Men’s Super League.
There wasn’t such good news at the other end of both the Men’s and Women’s Super League tables, as Maigh Cuilinn fell to a 14-point defeat on the road against Tralee Warriors in the Men’s top-flight; while UG Mystics edged closer to the door when they also went down to defeat on the road, coming out the wrong end of a 24-point difference against DCU Mercy.
That leaves Maigh Cuilinn in danger of finishing bottom of the Southern Conference, which will mean a play-off against the bottom side in the Northern Conference, with the losers of that pay-off being relegated to Division 1 nest season.
In the Women’s Super League, UG Mystics are in the relegation zone with three games remaining, but despite being two wins behind Ulster University, they still have a chance to avoid the drop, with the two student sides meeting on the final day of the season.
MEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
UG Maree 74
Ballincollig 59
UG Maree held off a fight-back by Ballincollig to secure a home quarter-final in the post-season play-offs as head coach, Charlie Crowley calls on his side to complete the league and cup double.
The win, coupled with a loss for Belfast Star, sees them go clear at the top of the league standings, but with Basketball Ireland confirming there is no regular season winner being crowned, the attention turns to the two conferences.
