Local resident lodges appeal to An Bord Pleanala over expansion plans at Galway Clinic

Local resident lodges appeal to An Bord Pleanala over expansion plans at Galway Clinic

An appeal has been lodged with An Bord Pleanala over considerable expansion plans at Galway Clinic.

The project is a two-storey expansion with extra assessment and diagnostic facilities, as well as a new ambulance bay.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Permission for the project was granted last month by city planners, though a number of objections had been lodged by local residents.

They claim the existing entrance layout is unsafe and a serious traffic hazard, and extra capacity would only make the problem worse.

They’re also taking issue with the planned removal of almost 50 parking spaces.

One local resident claimed the move will “aggravate” the existing problem of visitors parking along the adjacent public roads.

A survey carried out as part of the planning application found that during its busiest times, the hospital has almost 70 car parking spaces free – around 10 percent of the total capacity.

It concluded the extra spaces lost to the expansion project could be restored in the near future – as more people use public transport and other sustainable travel options.

Following the green light from city planners, an appeal has now been lodged with An Bord Pleanala, with a decision due in August.

An Bord Pleanála approves significant housing and enterprise development in Athenry

An Bord Pleanála approves significant housing and enterprise development in Athenry

An Bord Pleanala has given the go-ahead to plans for a significant mixed-use development in Athenry.

The project at Caherroyn Road would include more than 30 homes, as well as enteprise and office space.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Developer RHOC Athenry Ltd previously sought permission for a supermarket at the site, but was refused by county planners.

In late 2022 it came back with significantly different plans – a mixed-use development with a strong focus on enterprise.

The project would see 2 existing homes demolished, and replaced with four blocks of varying height.

Between them, they’ll offer 32 apartments, an enterprise centre, and a variety of start-up and office space.

But the latest plans were also rejected by county planners on several grounds, including traffic hazards and excessive density.

An appeal was lodged with An Bord Pleanala – which has now granted permission with some revised conditions.

It means the two projects will now be eligible for funding under the Connecting Europe Facility.

Calls for more recycling options in West of City

Calls for more recycling options in West of City

There are calls for more recycling options in the West of Galway City.

Councillor Alan Curran has pointed out there’s only one free recycling centre in the city for larger, awkward household items, and it’s on the Tuam Road.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

He also notes that while the centre at Liosbán Industrial estate disposes of most waste, it cannot dispose of hazardous items such as old paint cans and household chemicals.

Social Democrats City East councillor Curran says people are generally good at recycling, but the facilities need to be more accessible:

United aim to improve on dismal run against champions

United aim to improve on dismal run against champions United aim to improve on dismal run against champions

ANY time it has been put to Ollie Horgan this season that Galway United’s game against so-and-so will be a tough test, he always gives the same reply: United have been out of the Premier Division for seven years, and it is great to be playing these kind of games.

It was the attitude towards the trip to Oriel Park and to Tolka Park, to the Brandywell and to the Showgrounds, and it was the same upbeat attitude taken by United’s assistant manager towards tonight’s  trip to the Tallaght Stadium to take on Shamrock Rovers (8pm).

Whether or not it turns out to be an enjoyable trip remains to be seen: the reigning champions, who are going for a fifth consecutive title, have made a habit of sluggish starts in the past couple of years, but they look to be hitting their straps right now and a trip to Tallaght is the most daunting in the league.

United traded largely on parity when the sides met in Eamonn Deacy Park back in mid-March only for Johnny Kenny to come off the bench and score the only goal of the game five minutes from time to snatch the three points for the visitors.

That made it a scarcely believable 18 consecutive defeats against the Hoops in the league, and 21 in total when you include the FAI Cup,  and it is nearly 30 years since a United side last won away to Shams, a 2-1 win in the RDS back in October 1994.

“It is great to be going to Tallaght, it is a tough tough place to go, John [Caulfield] has been there with Cork many a time, I have been there many times with Finn Harps and if you are not right, it is a very hard place,” Horgan said after Monday night’s scoreless draw away to Sligo Rovers.

That was United’s third consecutive clean sheet, only the sixth time United have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the Premier Division since the introduction of two divisions for the 1985/86 season.

The most recent of those runs was the 2000/01 season, and it included a scorless draw away to Shamrock Rovers. No United side has ever kept four consecutive clean sheets in the top-flight, and there could not be a more daunting place to try and hit that mark than the Tallaght Stadium.
