New bollards turn Roscam into ‘Galway City’s Moulin Rouge’ New bollards turn Roscam into ‘Galway City’s Moulin Rouge’

Active Travel works currently underway in Roscam have hit another bump in the road as “ugly” bollards installed along the roadside drew the ire of local residents and businesses.

There was fury earlier this week as it became apparent red and white bollards were to be installed the length of the Doughiska Road in Roscam – stretching from the junction at the Spar shop as far as the level crossing.

However, a local councillor has confirmed that following a two-hour meeting with engineers on Tuesday, it has been decided not to proceed with their installation.

Cllr Alan Cheevers (FF) said it was his understanding that the bollards had been proposed as a protective measure for cyclists in the newly installed cycle lanes.

“The Cycling Campaign had submitted that they wanted the cycle lane to be properly separated from the car lane for health and safety reasons, and that is particularly important at the junction [near the shop], he said.

“I’ve now got an undertaking from the project manager in City Hall that they will be ceasing works on the bollards for the rest of the route, just maintaining the ones at the junctions.

“If there is illegal parking in the cycle lanes, that is something the gardaí are going to have to enforce and issue tickets for,” he continued.

Local businessman, Barra Nevin who owns the pharmacy in Roscam, said businesses and residents in the apartments in Roscam House had been particularly put out by the bollards proposals.

Their inclusion on the Doughiska Road would block off what is an ‘unofficial loading bay’ adjacent to Spar which was regularly used for deliveries, and by buses picking up school children in the mornings.

“The road has been narrowed as part of these works already, and with the bollards, buses would be forced to stop on the road, blocking the whole place which would be a health and safety issue.
