McGrath’s ‘winner’ ruled out in stalemate group struggle

Milltown 0-8

Caherlistrane 0-8

Gerard Mulreaney at Tuam Stadium

THERE was a controversial end to this drawn Senior Football Championship Group 3 tussle at Tuam Stadium on Friday evening.

With the sides level at eight points apiece deep in added time, Jonathan McGrath scored what looked like the winning point for Caherlistrane. Having initially been awarded the score, referee Frank Kinneen consulted his umpires prior to the kick-out and over-ruled the decision, instead awarding a free out for hopping the ball twice in the build-up.

Milltown came into the game on the back of two straight victories and were hoping a win here would put them on the brink of a spot in the quarter-finals. Caherlistrane were looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat to Claregalway last time out

Oisín O’Brien opened the scoring for Caherlistrane in the sixth minute with a free from the 45 metre line. In the tenth minute, a quick free from Jack Kirrane led to a move involving John Martin, Mark Hehir, and Mike Martin, before the ball was fed into Damian Brennan and he sent a right-footed shot over the bar to level the score.
